Our observance of the Advent season this year is of course different from any other: Instead of traditions and celebrations in person and in our church building, we’re challenged to celebrate the season in our homes. We begin here with suggestions for family activities for each Sunday (or week) in Advent.
First Sunday in Advent: “A Child is Born:” A luminary is simply an object that gives off light. Many people make luminaries to light the way to church or home on Christmas Eve. They are a beautiful addition to the sidewalk or driveway leading up to the door of the church or home.
Traditional luminaries are made with paper bags. Designs are cut out of the bag, and tissue is affixed behind the cutouts. After the design is done, the bags are filled with a couple of inches of kitty litter or gravel, and candles are carefully placed inside. I strongly suggest using battery operated candles for your luminary.
Though paper bag luminaries are the most traditional, there are many different options for making luminaries, from oranges to ice to clay. Do your research and choose the type of luminary that will be easiest for your family. As you light your luminary, remember Jesus’s words, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12), and ask, “How do we share our light with others?”
